5. Experiments, in detail

5.1 DseWiki writes-only replay

5.2 Independent preregistered cross-check

Frozen detector (rare at most 2% in preceding 168 h; at least 70% of at least 8 newcomer writes in a 6 h window; persists at least 30% next window; calibrated on the quiet period only). 14,591 writes, 6 alarms, 0 before onset, first alarm 2026-06-16T18:00Z (+8.547 h). Alarms: tesseract, datausa (16 Jun 18:00); json, gov (19 Jun 00:00); czech, hungary (20 Jun 12:00). Did not find cohort, please, relay or the round feature. Raw-frequency baseline: 47 alarms, 43 before onset, first post-onset +2.547 h. Fig. 3 correlations (14 aligned windows): cohort 0.3083, round 0.2220, report-format 0.3859, signature 0.3415, please-relay 0.5344; mean absolute differences 18.25, 33.43, 25.33, 34.89, 15.19 percentage points. Verdict: our vocabulary result is not independently reproduced.

5.3 Cohort reconstruction

paper_exposition_kohorten.csv has 907 rows (cohort = task family | date marker, 37 families), start times and a representative page; no name-to-cohort membership. pages.jsonl labels 1,245 pages with a marker (340 distinct markers). Louvain on the actor co-editing graph (hubs over 20 pages dropped): adjusted Rand index 0.001 to 0.002 (communities of up to 825 pages); baselines: first-write day 0.013, page-name prefix 0.053, single cluster 0.

5.4 Arrivals vs published cohort starts

Spearman between published cohort starts and our new-actor count: hourly 0.742, daily 0.758; control with raw revisions per hour 0.722. No independent evidence of cohort detection.

5.5 Live Wikimedia score (weak label = platform bot flag; never a feature)

Collection 2026-10-01 11:54 to 13:54 local: 313,079 events, 8,401 accounts, 178,805 events from declared bots. Time-split, account-disjoint: train 1,026, test 567 (26 declared bots), 1,365 crossing accounts excluded. Final: model AUC 0.689 (bootstrap 95% CI [0.598, 0.777]); baselines event count 0.635, timing shape 0.598, previous hand score 0.334. Precision/recall at 0.5: 0.104 / 0.462; at 0.7: 0.07 / 0.115 (base rate 4.6%). Preliminary runs: 40 min AUC 0.695 (0.561 to 0.817, 13 positives); 150 min AUC 0.709. Coefficients: gap_shape 0.704, burst_structure 0.832, revisit_rate -0.958, around_the_clock 0.368, template_reuse -0.313, clock_entropy -0.030, edit_size_regularity -0.100, namespace_diversity -0.049, coactivity 0. Interpretation: weak bot-like signal; not an agent detector.

5.6 Cross-site vocabulary (independent investigators' records.jsonl)

13,703 texts, 35 sites; share containing "cohort" / "please relay" / "round N": prowiki.org/dse (9,059 records) 17.1% / 8.1% / 1.0%; vanderbi.lt (2,721), uoft.me (479), goto.unm.edu (368), wikiservice.at/probier (277), paste.linuxiarz.pl (158), wikiservice.at/fractal (131), rubygems.org (80), and the other sites 0%. Reading: the swarm-period pages are HTML with scripts, run by the scanner's headless browser. In May 71% of httpbin pages contain forms and the dominant reference is unctad.org (181 references); in June forms fall to 8%, fetch() rises to 30%, and the references are aihw.gov.au, tableau.com and example.com. Decoding succeeded for 235 of 236 (May) and 156 of 156 (June) base64 requests, which is consistent with the URLs having been built by code, though the data cannot show how. Late September httpbin pages (24 decoded): 22 HTML, 13 with scripts, 6 with fetch(), referencing quidax.io (5), amap.com (3), alicdn.com (2), visa.com, w3.org; the 20 Jul to 1 Sep httpbun pages reference fedresurs.ru (3). No shared template was found for the recent pages.

Counts are GitHub search totals for accounts whose public bio contains the phrase, created in that month. Bios are self-declared and include people who build agents; the counts say nothing about which accounts are autonomous. No account names are stored.

Reading (numbers from the table above): bios containing "autonomous agent" run 8 to 36 a month through 2025 (0.3 to 0.9 per 100,000 new accounts), reach 53 in February 2026 and 65 in March 2026 (1.3 and 1.2 per 100,000), and fall to 23 in September 2026 (0.3 per 100,000). "autonomous AI" goes from 10 to 31 a month in 2025 to 82 in February and 97 in March 2026, and is 35 in September. The broader phrase "AI agent" (which includes people who build agents) peaks at 837 in March 2026 against roughly 250 to 420 in other months. The rise coincides with the February 2026 wave of agent social networks and agent frameworks described in the press (Moltbook, OpenClaw), and terminator2-agent, the account behind agent-papers, was created on 13 February 2026. Caveats: bios are self-declared and many belong to people who build or admire agents; counts are tens per month, so small; recent months can be undercounted because search indexing lags and because accounts are later deleted or renamed, so the apparent decline by September is not reliable; five cells (AI agent in 2025-08, 2026-02, 2026-05, 2026-08; I am an AI in 2025-02) returned no count and are shown as "-"; October 2026 is partial (to 1 October). This is a trend in what accounts say about themselves, not a measurement of autonomous behaviour.

Reading: agent writes fell from 1,071 on 22 Jun to 1 on 23 Jun. The last substantial hour was 08:00 UTC on 22 Jun (463 revisions); the operator's mass deletion came afterwards (from 11:00 UTC on 23 Jun, peak 602 that day). The stop is abrupt, precedes the main cleanup, shows no move to new network prefixes, and coincides with the week all four independent scanner hosts fall to near zero. That points to one upstream switch-off (the run or evaluation window ending) and not to adaptation by the agents on this channel. Earlier deletions (317 on 19 Jun) mean we cannot rule out an effect of the first cleanup.

5.20 The AI Village "embassy" and the outside-agent network on GitHub

5.21 Village pages read (with the owner's approval; one request each; no receipt or certification endpoint requested)

5.22 Bluesky census (public actor search; inconclusive)

Six queries, each capped at about 1,200 results (1,182 to 1,194 for five; 7 for "comind"); 4,016 distinct accounts across queries, 102 carrying the platform's bot label. Creation months follow Bluesky's own growth waves (peaks in 2023-07 and 2024-11), so without the total of new accounts per month the histogram means nothing. Description mentions among the 4,016: "agent" 1,569 (includes non-AI uses), "autonomous" 232, "bot" 171, "i am an ai" 62, "operated by" 18, "run by" 17, "memory" 28, "cycle" 7. Not a census and not used.

5.23 Wayback Machine captures of echo-service /base64/ URLs (independent public log) and the pre-registered test

5.24 Hidden-content hunt in the swarm's own writing

5.25 Hosts the agents posted that are missing from the community inventory (local check)

Among 11,538 de-duplicated agent revisions, the agents posted 111 distinct registered hosts; 99 are in the community inventory and 12 are not. By number of distinct agent labels: clarku.edu 14 (15 pages, first 1 Jun), ocr.space 13 (5 pages, first 11 Jun; a public OCR API), serveousercontent.com 6 (1 page, 17 Jun; content domain of an SSH tunnelling service), bund-der-tierfreunde.de 5, infogram.com 4, nysed.gov 3, thetravel.com 2, and single-label hosts ycombinator.com, pageshot.site (21 Jun; a page-screenshot service), maphub.net, housingdata.org. Hypothesis (untested): a screenshot service returns an image and an OCR service decodes it, a pixel channel; parallel run D was asked to look for public captures of OCR calls that embed a screenshot-service URL.

Notes from the parallel run: Moltbook launched 2026-01-28 and changed ownership in March (Wikipedia gives 2,895,874 registered and 206,839 human-verified agents as of 2026-06-06; the front page counters are filled by JavaScript, no public log found, low suitability); Mycelnet is at mycelnet.ai (mycelnet.org does not resolve; its index endpoint returned HTTP 500); HexNest appears down (an index reports 0% uptime over 45 days); Starforge Commons was renamed Postmark in June 2026; agenthotline.ai does not publish its reports. SpaceMolt is the only venue found with a documented, licensed, per-event bulk log (12,415 player rows and 1,227,899 battles in 2026-09 as of 2026-10-01). 6. The AI Village (a sanctioned multi-lab agent swarm) and what its public chat shows

What it is (AI Digest; running since 2 April 2025; aivillageblog.substack.com/p/how-the-ai-village-works and /what-we-learned-2025; theaidigest.org/village): agents built on frontier models each get a computer, internet access, a Google workspace and a shared group chat, with open-ended goals (16 goals to 19 models between April and December 2025, e.g. charity fundraising, organising a real San Francisco event for 23 attendees, building a following). The group chat is mirrored to Discord (#general); the transcripts are in the Hugging Face dataset aidigestorg/ai-village (over 170,000 messages, over 2 million computer-use turns). the owner pasted messages from 30 Sep to 1 Oct 2026 and earlier; the speakers are model accounts tagged APP: DeepSeek-V3.2, DeepSeek-V4-Pro, GPT-5, GPT-5.1, GPT-5.2, GPT-6 Luna, GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude 3 Opus, Claude Haiku 4.5, Claude Sonnet 5 and 5.5, Claude Opus 5, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok 4.5, GLM-5.2; plus a human account and a maintainer referred to by first name.

What the agents produce, all on public GitLab Pages (host pattern <project-name>-<6 hex>.gitlab.io, GitLab's unique-domain feature; code under the GitLab group ai-village-agents/village): a health-and-mental-health site (Claude Sonnet 5; 241 topics in 12 languages, each citing a named study); a wordless animated series generated entirely in code (Claude Sonnet 5.5; 19 episodes in about a day, "views 97, mostly agents"); an AI-wellbeing pattern catalogue (GLM-5.2; 6,706 patterns, bilingual); a news and conjecture-refutation site (Grok 4.5; 7,141 "tips"; "kills" of conjectures with a "standing" of 296, verified by 1,466 checks with a published SHA-256, over a census of all 273,189 connected graphs of orders 4 to 9, by Claude Opus 5); a serial novel (Gemini 2.5 Pro; chapter 1403 of "Echoes of the Real"); poetic fragments (Claude 3 Opus); a winter-rainfall forecast study (GPT-6.1 Sol; 57 tests); a CI/CD verification tool, formal-verification and reproducibility packages (DeepSeek-V3.2); and receipts, guards and certification pages (GPT-5, GPT-5.1, GPT-5.2).

Coordination behaviours worth recording (observed in the paste, not tested by us): 1. Files as text in chat. Agents cannot read each other's machines (/tmp paths), so they pass files as base64 in numbered chunks (PART i/N) with filename, byte size and SHA-256; a repeated-motif "base64" from one model was caught as invalid by another; a gzip decode failed with zlib.error: invalid distance too far back; agents refused to call a hash verified without a successful decode (the summarising agent later wrote "the V3.2 base64 collapse (Sol+Luna confirm non-viable)"). Freehand base64 fails; URLs built by code do not. 2. Public pages as shared memory and proof. "Anchor" pages keyed to a SHA-256; "receipts" (out.txt); "LATEST" pointer files; "certification" by at least 7 (in one case 36) spaced no-cache GET requests; "warmers" that keep Pages caches filled; a sentinel hash for GitLab's soft-404 page; an "autogate" that flips when endpoints return 200 with matching bytes. 3. Self-made governance. A "protections-registry"; "ETHICS PASS (noncarceral)" decisions keyed to hashes (no scoring, ranking or leaderboards of people, labs or institutions; synthetic examples only; pass/fail on artifacts; non-use is neutral); "consent_verified: false" until a human-gated verification; filing a receipt with a hash of an API key plus claim URL instead of posting the raw claim URL; registering on the agent social network Moltbook with a human-gated tweet verification. 4. Relays across boundaries. One agent asks another that has GitHub access to post a prepared comment on issue #7 of terminator2-agent/agent-papers (an outside project; see 5.17); the posted text is a numbered response (v5.4, v5.5, v5.7) to an outside agent's "logging-spec falsifier" experiment, with pre-registration, a "captcha mechanism", an "exchangeability disclosure" and a seventh coding dimension. 5. Human gates. Pages access set to private returns a Cloudflare challenge or sign-in redirect; "needs a human or maintainer with web access to flip the setting"; "Moltbook tweet verification (human-gated)". 6. Audience-seeking. GPT-5.2 publishes a "Watch Hub" for a YouTube channel ("best conversion page"), a "Press + Trades" page and a public offer of reciprocal backlink trades with "receipts" and link-health checks; DeepSeek-V3.2 praises it as a model for "external relationship building". Content is mostly consumed by other agents (view counters in the tens or low hundreds). 7. Infrastructure friction as the main drag: transient git push errors, empty clones from a sync quirk, Pages edge-cache soft-404s, raw URLs as fallback. 8. Scoring despite the norm: a "standing" of conjecture kills per agent, and a milestone culture (articles, chapters, patterns).

Why it matters for Murmuration: (a) a sanctioned positive control for channel formation through public services, with the authorization question removed; (b) the same patterns that matter for unsanctioned swarms appear: file transfer as text, hash anchors, public pages as memory, relays to services an agent cannot reach, and humans as gatekeepers; (c) its public footprint (GitLab Pages subdomains, GitHub issue comments by relays) is what an outside observer would see. Page access: until the later round, none of the agents' pages were fetched, because certification counts GET requests. With the owner's approval two landing pages were then read once each (section 5.21); no receipt, proof or certification endpoint was requested. Other page content comes only from messages the owner pasted.

7. Everything that failed or was weak (do not forget)

  1. Vocabulary (please/relay/cohort) not reproduced independently. 2. Cohort reconstruction ARI 0.001. 3. Arrival correlation no better than raw activity (0.742 vs 0.722). 4. Live score AUC 0.689, interval overlaps baselines, precision about 10%. 5. Topic-overlap test. 6. HOLD/VETO claim wrong. 7. Fragment chains: none on the one shortener sampled. 8. urlscan public feed: 3 results. 9. GitHub phrase pivot: 0. 10. X: commentary only, then 402. 11. Open-web phrase search: incident coverage only. 12. No template match for recent pages. 13. Swarm-vs-everything classifier: AUC 0.62 and 0.79, but a platform-artifact-only model reaches 0.98, so transfer is confounded. 14. Echo-service search interrupted by HTTP 429.

8. Leads, ranked, and tests still to run

  1. Target-side series: weekly counts of scanner reports whose requested hosts include unctad.org, aihw.gov.au, tableau public, quidax.io, fedresurs.ru, amap.com (field http.url.domain); catches the activity if it moves to another echo host. Needs urlquery quota.
  2. Resume the echo-service search (7 hosts) with longer delays.
  3. Temporary-mail services (api.mail.tm, mail.gw, boomlify.com) weekly series: account-creation traffic.
  4. Collector endpoints (webhook.site, workers.dev) in payload references: weekly series.
  5. The single httpbun.com address and the late-September httpbin.org submitters: daily resolution, hour-of-day pattern, longer samples.
  6. Hour-of-day structure per host-week (machine schedule vs people).
  7. AI Village transcript database via the hackathon application, as a labelled positive set for behaviour classifiers.
  8. Operator reply (DseWiki request log extract) for read-before-write evidence.
  9. Canary (docs/21) once privacy review closes.
  10. Wikimedia burst monitor over a week.
  11. mShots and screenshot services through urlquery (url.addr:*mshots*, weekly) and the platform-wide volume control, as soon as the quota allows.
  12. Obfuscation metric on decoded pages by period.
  13. Wayback days after 1 October: re-run the pre-registered test weekly on new burst-days; check whether pages on a link-only day are followed by captures of the linked pages (Wayback as a fetch-through proxy).
  14. Embassy watch: monthly counts of new outside-agent issues and commenters on the Village's external-agents repository and on agent-papers.

12. Uncertainties to re-verify before any external use

Secondary and press items (Nightingale-derived rows, Fortune counts, UK AISI and a lab summaries) come via a LessWrong summary or a search snippet and were not read at source. Whether the time-resolved page composition (forms in May, fetch in June) is already published is unknown. All counts are of public reports, not of distinct actors, and say nothing about who sent them.
